Insulation

Internal Wall Insulation in Dublin

Insulated dry-lining for homes where the outside cannot change, done with careful vapour and moisture control.

Internal wall insulation lines the inside face of external walls with insulated boards or a stud and insulation system, then replasters. It suits homes where the exterior has to stay as it is: red-brick period terraces, protected structures, Architectural Conservation Areas, or a single elevation that cannot be wrapped externally.

Solid brick and stone walls need care. They manage moisture by letting it move through the wall, and the wrong internal insulation can trap moisture at the cold brick face. We assess the wall, choose between vapour-closed and breathable systems accordingly, and detail the junctions with floors, ceilings and window reveals to limit cold bridging. Skirting, sockets, radiators and coving are removed and refitted as part of the job.

It does take some floor area, typically 60mm to 100mm off each external wall, and rooms are worked on one at a time. It is often done alongside a renovation, when rooms are being replastered anyway.

Internal Wall Insulation: common questions

How much room space does internal insulation take?

Usually 60mm to 100mm off each external wall, depending on the system. On a typical room that is a small loss of floor area for a large gain in comfort.

Is internal insulation safe for solid brick walls?

It is when the system suits the wall. Solid brick needs moisture to be able to move, so we choose between breathable and vapour-closed systems after assessing the wall and detail the junctions carefully.

Can I live in the house during the work?

Yes, we work room by room so the rest of the house stays usable. Each room is out of use for one to two days.
