Insulation

Floor Insulation in Dublin

Insulating suspended timber and solid ground floors to stop cold floors and draughts at skirting level.

Ground floors lose heat into the ground and, in older homes, let in a surprising amount of cold air. Period houses with suspended timber floors are often draughty because air moves freely through the ventilated void below and up through gaps between boards and at the skirting.

For suspended timber floors we lift boards, fit insulation between the joists on supports, add an airtightness layer, and relay the floor, making sure the void below stays ventilated so the timbers stay dry. For solid floors the options are rigid insulation over the slab with a new floor finish, or excavating and relaying the slab with insulation beneath, which is usually done as part of a renovation or extension.

Floor insulation is often best combined with other works, such as new flooring, underfloor heating or a kitchen refit, so the floor only has to be disturbed once.

Floor Insulation: common questions

Can you insulate a suspended timber floor without removing it?

In some homes the floor can be insulated from below through an accessible void, but most Dublin period floors need boards lifted. We assess access before recommending a method.

Will floor insulation stop draughts?

Yes. Much of the cold felt in period homes comes from air moving up through boards and at the skirting. Sealing those gaps is part of the job.

Is there a grant for floor insulation?

Floor insulation is grant-aided at €3,500 through the SEAI One Stop Shop route, not as an individual grant. We can advise whether that route suits your upgrade.
