External Wall Insulation in Dublin
A certified insulated render system wrapped around the outside of the house, with the details around windows, eaves and sills done properly.
External wall insulation fixes insulation boards to the outside face of the walls and finishes them with a reinforced render system. Because the insulation is continuous around the house, it deals with the cold bridges at floors and party walls that internal insulation struggles with, and the work happens outside so you can stay living in the house.
It is the main upgrade for solid-wall and hollow-block homes that cannot take a cavity fill. The quality is in the detailing: extending window sills, insulating reveals, sealing around pipes and vents, terminating correctly at the eaves and the ground, and keeping the system clear of damp. We install Baumit ETICS systems under NSAI Agrément certification, which is what SEAI grant work requires.
EWI changes the look of a house, so the finish is chosen with you, from smooth or textured render to brick-effect slips. Homes in conservation areas or protected structures may need planning, and front elevations of period terraces are often better suited to internal insulation.

External Wall Insulation: common questions
Does external wall insulation need planning permission?
Most external insulation is exempted development, but protected structures, Architectural Conservation Areas and changes that affect the look of a terrace can need planning. We check this at survey stage.
Will external insulation stop damp?
It keeps the wall warmer, which reduces condensation and mould on internal surfaces. Rising or penetrating damp has to be dealt with first, which is why we test the walls before specifying a system.
How long does an external wall insulation job take?
Five to ten working days for a typical semi-detached house, depending on weather. Render cannot be applied in rain or frost, so we plan around the forecast.
